چکیده

The interaction of a building, its foundation and the underlying soils may have important effects on the behavior of each of these components as well as on the overall system behavior. For example, the relative stiffness of a building structure, its mat foundation and the soils that support the foundation will influence the stresses and displacements of both the structure and soil. Soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects are sometimes neglected by the use of a structural model supported on a fixed base. Other simple models assume an ideally flexible or infinitely rigid foundation on an elastic subsoil. An investigation of the effects of SSI on the stresses and displacements in the structure and the soil of a model fifty-story steel frame structure with a concrete mat foundation bearing on a deformable soil was undertaken as a means of best understanding how to perform and apply SSI analyses. The study included investigating the effects of the stiffnesses of the building, its mat foundation and an elastic subsoil on the stresses, internal forces and displacements of the building, foundation and subsoils. The soil-structure model also considered the effects of foundation embedment.

Seismic Evaluation of Flexible-Base Low-Rise Steel Frames Using Beam-On-Nonlinear-Winkler-Foundation Modeling of Shallow Footings

Recent investigations have shown that the influences of Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) may be detrimental to the seismic response of structure, and hence neglecting this phenomenon in analysis and design may lead to an un-conservative design. The objective of this paper is to quantify the effects of nonlinear soil-structure interaction on the seismic response of a low-rise special moment fram...

Analyzing the Effects of Soil-Structure Interactions on the Static Response of Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations Using Finite Element Method

The use of wind turbines to generate electricity has increased in recent years. One of the most important parts of a wind turbine is the foundation, which should be designed accurately because it is influenced by difference forces. Soil cannot carry tension stress; thus, when a wind turbine foundation is applied eccentricity forces, a gap appears between the soil and foundation. The gap will ha...

Geotechnical Interaction of Piled Raft Foundations: Two Case Studies

Application of pile-raft foundations, which are known as “compound foundations”, is a suitable alternative in the case of heavy load structures. The interaction behavior of pile raft foundations makes these systems very complex to analyze. Different methods have been proposed to determine the bearing capacity of piled raft systems and distribution of loads between the components, i.e. pile grou...

Soil Structure Interaction Effects on Hysteretic Energy Demand for Stiffness Degrading Systems Built on Flexible Soil Sites

This paper aims to study the influence of soil-structure interaction on plastic energy demand spectra directly derived from the energy-balance equations of soil-shallow-foundation structure with respect to an ensemble of far-field strong ground motions obtained from Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) database and recorded on alluvium soil. The superstructure is modeled as a single-d...
